Situated on the main Thongsala to Chaloklam road, driving from Thongsala look for the elephant trekking site on your right and you will see a signpost for the waterfall pointing up a small, steep, concrete path. You can ride a scooter up but take care.
The track is also very narrow, please give way to people coming down, it’s a lot harder for them to stop than it is for you going up!

Paradise waterfall is far from being the most beautiful on Koh Phangan but it is definitely one of the easiest to access.
The water course dries up in the summer months, so it’s best to ask a local if they think there will be water before you make the journey to visit it.

Water cascades down a series of rock walls, pooling at the bottom in two large pools. It is possible to climb the waterfall and also swim in the pools. There is a restaurant at the bottom of the waterfall selling decent food and cold drinks……
Be careful driving your scooter back down the path when you leave, it is very steep in places with large holes, very easy to ground out your scooter and take a spill.

Koh Phangan is an excellent choice of venue for learning to dive, course prices are typical 30%-50% lower than on neighbouring Koh Samui, living costs are also cheaper on Koh Phangan. Sharing all the same major dive spots as Koh Samui and Koh Tao there really is no reason not to save the money you would spend learning from one of the large dives shops on the more commercial islands.
There are a wealth of dive shops upon Koh Phangan, offering both PADI and SSI courses, all quote very similar rates.
Situated on a side street in Thongsala locally named ‘farang’ street you will find Phangan Fun Factory. And these guys live up to their name, the focus is fun. Juergen the owner of Fun Factory surely knows how to teach scuba diving safely whilst assuring his clients have a darn good time.

Fun Factory are the owners of a particularly interesting dive boat, forgoing the option of a modern speed boat for a converted fishing vessel that formerly used to fish the waters around Koh Phangan. The boat has been fully converted for diving but retains one hell of a lot of charm and is instantly recognisable as a fishing boat when berthed amongst it’s working brothers in Chaloklam……
Fun Factory offer both PADI and SSI courses and are equipped with an air conditioned classroom inside their retail shop. Prices are as follows:

Open Water Diver – 4 days – B10,500
Advanced Open Water – 2 or 3 days – B9,500
Rescue Diver – 4 days – B9,800
Emergency First Responder – B3,000
Specialty Photography – B9,500
Specialty Deep – B8,200
Divemaster – 6 weeks – B26,000

They also offer fun dives for existing qualified divers to all the major dive spots in the area including night dives for between B2,500 and B2,900 depending upon the dive location. Snorkelers are also welcome upon the boat for the day for the price of B1,100.

Located at the northern end of Koh Phangan, Koh Ma is a small islet that at times of low tide is connected by a sand bar to Koh Phangan. Take the Chaloklam road north and look for a small turning on the left with a sign to Koh Ma, it’s quite easy to miss. If you get to Chaloklam you have gone too far!
If you are staying in Haad Rin (as many people do) then this is a great excursion for you, the journey itself will show you a whole new facet of Koh Phangan as you leave the rowdy southern half and enter the still relatively unspoiled north.
The coral reef lays very close to shore in this area and the snorkeling is fantastic, best out towards Koh Ma itself but plenty to see closer to shore if you are not the strongest of swimmers.

The image above was taken on quite a stormy day at very low tide and does not do the area justice. On a fine day the waters are crystal blue and teaming with life. The beach itself is very clean and usually quiet……
Massage is available right on the beach under the shade of some large trees, very relaxing listening to the surf and enjoying the sea breeze whilst one of the girls works out your tired muscles after snorkeling.

Several companies offer snorkeling trips by boat to Koh Ma, usually including lunch. This can be a very good way to enjoy this lovely spot but in truth you can see everything you will see on the tour just by swimming off the beach. If you are on a budget just take your snorkel and mask along and off you go!

Head to Ban Tai coming from Thongsala, turn left just before the 7/11 and you will find Wat Pho herbal sauna just a short way up on the left.
I was privileged to spend some time with Mr Lek who runs the sauna a few days ago. The first thing I noticed was his absolute passion for his job. This man knows one heck of a lot about aromatherapy, massage and above all else, steam!
He spent a long time showing me the catalogues from which he orders the herbs he uses for the sauna mix. I always presumed there were just a few things put into the vat but how wrong I was. He presented me with a list of over 20 separate herbs that he uses, some don’t even have a name in English. Amongst them are cloves, turmeric, safflower, lemon grass, fennel, caraway, dill, acacia, cinnamon and camphor.

He explained that the optimal way to make use of the sauna was to spend 10-15 minutes inside and then come out for the same amount of time, repeat this 2 or 3 times……
The sauna itself helps your body in many ways, clearing the lungs, relieving tension, helping circulation and cleaning the sinuses and airways. It is also good for all types of muscle pain.
However, it must be pointed out that for some people it can be dangerous to use such a steam room. People with heart problems, angina, diarrhea, epilepsy or kidney problems should avoid it.

Not only is the sauna itself very healthy, the grounds are very peaceful and their is a massage room attached to the sauna. It really is quite a nice way to spend an afternoon, first a massage and then into the sauna afterward, spending some time sitting in the gardens and enjoying the tranquility.
