If you are planning to head to Africa for a safari holiday, here are some tips to help you make the most of it.

Find out about it first. Get a book or two out of the library and maybe watch some safari videos to give you an idea of where you want to go and what you want to do on safari. This will whet your appetite for the trip as well as letting you know what to expect in certain areas.

Look for bargains. The market for safari holidays in Africa is highly competitive, and they can vary widely in cost. Sometimes a desirable area will be cheaper to visit than it would be normally due to political and economic factors, so keep your ear close to the ground for bargains.

Pick somewhere good to stay. Accommodation in Africa can vary widely in quality, so seek out reliable recommendations from people who have been there before. Also, check travel guides and internet sites, as these can provide a wealth of information about the best and worst places to stay on safari.

Find a convenient spot. Although camps and lodges with their own private airstrip can be expensive to stay in, the reduced transfer times involved mean that you can spend more of your precious holiday on safari.

Get your paperwork in order. Unless you are heading to Zimbabwe or Zambia, you will not need a visa to enter Africa, but you will need a full passport with at least six months to run on it.

Get insured. It is a good idea to get travel insurance whenever you visit a foreign country, but it is particularly important in Africa. Some tour operators will not allow you to travel without insurance, so get this sorted as soon as you have the holiday booked.

Cut your travel costs. You can save a lot of money on travel if you shop around online for the best deals. Remember to budget for travel to and from the airport as well as the flight itself. Easybus currently offer cut price bus journeys to and from airports in London if you book in advance, which leaves you more money with which to enjoy your safari adventure.

The rise in the popularity of air travel, driven in no small part by a plethora of low cost airlines, has seen a rapid increase in the number of international airports around the UK. It also means that you may have to travel across the country to get a flight, with only certain airports offering certain routes.

London, as ever, is right at the heart of Britain’s air travel industry. With Heathrow recently expanding, and the likes of Gatwick, Stansted, Luton and City Airport all transporting more customers than ever before, for most people, their holiday starts dealing with London’s transport network just to get to the airport.

Whilst there are Underground or overland rail transfers to each of the airports mentioned above, and there is always the option of a taxi, the EasyBus is undeniably the cheapest way to get to any of London’s EasyJet airports: Gatwick, Stansted, and Luton.

Unfortunately, it is somewhat prone to the vagaries of London’s transport, and it takes around an hour and a half to get from the Victoria Bus Station to Stansted airport, an hour to Gatwick from Fulham Road, and around an hour and twenty minutes from Victoria Bus Station to London Luton. This is around double the amount of time it takes on the train.

The flip side of the coin is that the cost of the bus is just a fraction of the price of the train ticket. If you book online in advance, an EasyBus ticket will cost you only £2 to get to the airport and another £2 to get back.

There is also the issue of convenience, if you can get to the bus stop with your luggage, after that you just have to sit back and let someone else get you to the airport. An hour and a half is a long time, but there is a fairly large portion of time in there that is purely in case of bad traffic, you do not have to worry about not getting to the airport on time.

A further advantage is that you don’t have to be taking an EasyJet flight to get the EasyBus. Whilst they are owned by the same group, regardless of who you are flying with you will be able to get to the airport via the EasyBus.

Getting to the airport quickly is always important, but there is something to be said for letting someone else do all the work and not having to worry about negotiating a busy train station with a heavy suitcase. If you’re heading out on holiday, it might be worth using EasyBus to get to the airport.

When it comes to successful holidays, planning in advance is the way to go. Working from your own list or a checklist like ours will help you to remember everything that you need. Simply tick off each item as it goes into your luggage.

The paperwork – your passport is obviously essential! Make sure your passport is up to date before travel. It is also a good idea to scan your passport and send a copy to your email inbox in case it gets lost. Remember to pack your travel tickets, printed directions and maps, and a copy of your hotel details. You may also need your driving licence and visa.

Before your flight – many holidaymakers are so busy packing and booking flights and hotels that they forget about how they are going to get to the airport! Plan your route in advance, taking note of any planned road or rail works. If you are travelling on a budget then Easybus do direct bus transfers to all London airports for just a few pounds per ticket. Check their website for details.

Spending money – remember your spending cash. If you are planning on taking a lot of money with you then you should take the bulk of it in the form of travellers cheques. Remember your credit card, debit card or ATM card too.

For the plane – your suitcase needs to be clearly labelled, so remember luggage ID tags and locks to secure your baggage. Take a book, magazine or MP3 player to keep you entertained on the plane. Also useful is a notebook and pen, a travel first aid kit and a mini sewing kit.

Gadgets and gizmos – remember your phone and charger, with adaptor plug if necessary. You might want to carry your laptop, and do not forget your camera, film and memory card as well as fresh batteries or camera charger.

Clothing – your destination will play the biggest part in deciding what you need to pack, but here some basics to remember include underwear, socks, tshirts, trousers and shorts, skirts and dresses, swimming costumes and bikinis, sunglasses, pyjamas and comfortable shoes.

Toiletries – toiletries tend to be easy to come by when on holiday, but it can be annoying when you leave one of your favourite products behind. Some basic items for you to pack are your toothpaste and toothbrush, razor and shaving cream, aftershave and perfume, deodorant, hairspray and hair gel, sun cream and contact lens solution if required.

The Finnish capital of Helsinki can boast hundreds of spectacular tourist attractions. Here are just a few of the best:

Temppeliaukion, the Church of the Rock. This stunning modern church was built in the 1960s. It is built into solid rock, with not a brick in sight, and boasts a stunning metallic dome ceiling with over 180 pieces of glass and exceptional acoustics, making it a great venue for musical events.

Senaatintori , The Senate Square. This attractive neo classical square, situated in the heart of Helsinki, is home to the main building of the University of Helsinki, a statue of Emperor Alexander II, and the palace of the Senate.

Tuomiokirkko, The Helsinki Cathedral. This beautiful building is one of the greatest examples of Finnish architecture. Designed by Carl Engel in his trademark neoclassical style, it can seat over 1300 people and can boast the biggest zinc statues to be found anywhere in the world.

Soumenlinna, The 18th Century Sea Fortress. Once known as the Gibraltar of the North, this fortress was constructed in the 1740s in an attempt to fend off Russian attacks on Helsinki. Nowadays, it is home to a whole host of tourist attractions such as museums, restaurants, and parks.

Ateneum Art Museum and National Museum: It is a little known fact that Finland has more museums per square foot than anywhere else in the world. The Ateneum art museum has the biggest, and some would say best, collection of Finnish art in the country. The nearby National museum is also worth a visit, as it contains a large collection of Finnish pre-historic artifacts.

Linnanmäki, Amusement park: This is the oldest amusement park in Helsinki, and it can boast new fewer than 37 rides, a play castle, an arcade, and a museum. In particular, the mountain rail ride, which gives excellent views of the city from a high vantage point, is one of the most popular.

Remember that if you are heading to Helsinki by plane, you will need to get to the airport and back. This can be expensive, but you can save a lot of money on this by booking in advance with an operator such as Easybus.

Not everyone is going to be suited to operating a cupcake shop. Certain types of people will thrive in this socially focused environment; others will find that dealing with members of the public can be stressful. Remember, you are not alone, find your own strengths and weaknesses, exploit your strengths and employ others to cover your weaknesses. Choosing the right team to support you is critical. There is no reason why anybody should feel that they do not have the required skills to open a profitable cupcake business; people from all walks of life already enjoy the freedom that owning their own business gives them.

Cupcake Video!

Opening any form of quick turnover, customer driven retailsstore, is one of the less risky forms of owning your own business. Quite often, the whole organization can be established on a modest budget, and will not require vast amounts of capital injection to launch. Risks are minimized due to the fact you will not be required to maintain high stock levels of slow moving products. If you are looking for a business idea with a low entry cost, and very slight risk, then a cupcake bakery makes a logical choice.

There can be few business models as simple as running a cupcake shop. Procure goods, attract customers, sell goods, repeat, anybody can do it. Unless you are actually baking the cupcakes yourself, no special skills are required. Of course, any experience you have in any of field of expertise that can be applied to running a cupcake shop, such as marketing or man management skills, will hold you in good stead, but they are far from being requirements. Being a people person would be helpful, but not totally necessary, if you are the kind of person who is happier working behind the scenes, then simply hire the staff you need to deal with the customers and stick to what you enjoy doing. People from all walks of life have established successful cupcake business all over the nation, there is no reason why you cannot also.

If we consider all that has been said so far, it is hard to imagine why anybody would fail to see the clear reasons for opening a cupcake shop or bakery. A product which is demand, coupled to an extremely easy to operate business that requires very little starting capital or previous experience. It is hoped that the information provided within the rest of this book will do much to help you make the transition from somebody considering establishing a new cupcake business, to somebody who owns a profitable and flourishing cupcake bakery.

What are the reasons why you should open a cupcake bakery? What kinds of people are suited to owning and running a cupcake bakery? What are the risks involved? Is it difficult? All of these questions will be discussed below, and hopefully some sensible answers presented.

Cupcake Video!

A good question deserves a good answer, so let us think about the reasons why opening a cupcake bakery can make excellent sense in certain situations. We have already highlighted the fact that the demand for cupcakes is still far greater than the availability in certain cities, towns and neighborhoods. This single fact alone represents the prime reason that opening a cupcake bakery is a sound business idea. Now we have identified the driving commercial reason, let’s move on to some of the more diverse reasons that opening a cupcake bakery can be a rewarding and profitable business venture.

Many people dream of owning their own business, unfortunately this is all that they do, they dream and they never succeed, they cannot find a market niche to exploit, or do not have the knowledge and experienced required to operate within a new and strange working environment. What this kind of person needs is a simple business, with a streamlined, un-complicated supplier to consumer type business model. Unfortunately, the options for this kind if retail business are fairly narrow. Firstly the prospective business owner would need to find a product that the public want to buy in great enough quantities to make the venture profitable. Secondly they would need to learn how to administer a business, and manage their enterprise. Lastly, they would be required to raise enough capital to buy stock, rent premises and purchase all of the usual chattels required to operate a retail business.

When we consider a cupcake bakery as a possible business venture, we are already focusing upon a market that has a clear, profitable and exploitable niche already identified. People love cupcakes, if you sell cupcakes in a place that has a limited supply, then you are going to succeed, it is as simple as that. So we have solved the first problem. Moving on to business administration, what could be simpler than vending a consumable product, which is produced daily? There are no worries with stock levels, there are no problems with raising capital to post as a bond with expensive suppliers. In simple terms, you buy or make your cupcakes, you sell them, if you sell them all too quickly you procure more the next time around, if you do not sell them all, you procure less when you re-stock. Nothing complicated no rocket science, just simple common sense and basic arithmetic. In a similar fashion, there is very little administrative overhead involved in running a cupcake shop or bakery; it is a very simple business to consumer setup, very easy to run.

In recent times it seems that cupcakes are experiencing an incredible boom in popularity, many large commercial bakeries and franchise chains have been quick to pick up on this trend, but just what is the cupcake revolution? And how did it come about?

Cupcake Video!

Around ten years ago, the Magnolia Bakery was opened in Greenwich, by Allysa Torey and Jennifer Appel. Things were working out smoothly, no great surprises, a successful bakery for all accounts and purposes. Neither of the founders could have expected the incredible events that would transpire once their delicious cupcakes found themselves featured in an episode of Sex in the City. Almost overnight, a national trend was gathering momentum, and the Magnolia Bakery rocketed to fame, with success following quickly in its wake. The Magnolia Bakery was forced to take sweeping steps to solve its supply and demand problems, queues formed in the street with would-be cupcake consumers waiting eagerly to purchase this delightful, and now TV endorsed food. Eventually, The Magnolia Bakery was forced to introduce restrictions upon the number of cupcakes each individual could purchase at a time, and the cupcake revolution was in full swing.

Following these heady days of cupcake mania, in 2000, Jennifer Appel decided to leave The Magnolia Bakery and start out on her own, with the brand new Buttercup Bakery. Let us not forget that by this time, cupcakes were big business, industry figures were beginning to emerge which showed that cupcakes were fast becoming the nations favorite snack food. This new event in the history of cupcakes was the herald to a new and incredibly intriguing chapter of the cupcake story, a chapter that has come to be known as “cupcake wars”. The national press were quick to elevate these commercial squabbles, and the nation sat captivated as a full on turf war developed.

The inevitable rise in competition between existing bakeries and enterprising new players in the market lead to an on-going series of legal battles, as business entities fought it out for their slice of the cupcake pie. There has been a significant quantity of very public lawsuits, several broken friendships and a whole mountain of both positive and negative press which pertains to these particularly messy confrontations.

As with any evolving market, existing players were forced to do battle with new pretenders in an effort to retain their turf. Many news sources have been quick to take up the analogy of a mafia gang war, as it seemed at times that rival bakeries were willing to go to any lengths to ensure their control of the local cupcake market was absolute. Eventually the whole sticky mess has slowly resolved itself, and there has been a huge uptrend in the amount of bakeries, both large and small, which are enjoying the benefits of the current popularity of the humble cupcake.

Current industry figures would seem to support the view of analysts by underpinning the fact that cupcakes are if anything, more popular today than they have been at any other time. In a market that has seen an immense of growth within the past ten years, it is incredible to realize that there are still plenty of opportunities to establish a successful and profitable cupcake bakery. Many neighborhoods do not have local access to a quality cupcake bakery. What we have here before us is a product that is in greater demand than its supply, if we consider this fact, it is clear to see that the cupcake is indeed a sweet proposition.

What is so special about the humble cupcake? Where did they first originate from? How have they changed over the decades? Why are they so popular today? These are all questions we will aim to answer within this section of the book. There can be no doubt that we are in the middle of a veritable cupcake explosion, so let’s take a closer look at the humble cupcake in an attempt to discover why it has become so spectacularly popular.

Cupcake Video!

Cupcakes have been in the national news many times over the last few years, if we take the time to reflect upon the events that took place during the cupcake revolution, and right on through the cupcake wars, it seems incredible that something as simple as the cupcake could have caused such a stir… or is it? Let us take a quick journey through the history of the cupcake and see if we can find some kind of reason for their popularity and recent newsworthiness.

Cupcakes have been around in a recognisable form since the early 19th century, they have been enjoyed by young and old alike for over 100 years, and if anything, are more popular right now than they ever have been before.

The development of the cupcake was primarily driven by baking techniques in the early 1900s. Measuring tools were fairly crude back then, so recipes and portions were fairly standardised, as they were passed on by word of mouth, and used simple measures of ingredients, as opposed to the complicated way that we weigh and apportion ingredients in modern times. If we look back to the way food was prepared and presented almost a century ago, we find that most food was served in significantly smaller portions than they are today. The original cupcake would have been around three times smaller than the gargantuan dessert treats that are being baked in modern times, they were also far more basic, the multi-layered, impressively decorated examples we now see being produced are a fairly recent trend.

Cupcakes have been around for a long time, so it is hardly surprising to find they have become one of the most often baked, sold and consumed sweetmeats on the globe. We have also witnessed several variations on the Cupcake theme developed by specific companies such as Hostess, who changed the traditional formula a little to create products such as Twinkies. We have also seen companies producing mini or bite sized cupcakes, which just goes to prove that you can never have enough of a good thing! When we consider the modern cupcake, it can sometimes be hard to remember that originally, they were cakes, and not the incredible dessert they have evolved into.

Cupcakes continue to gain in popularity for a whole range of different reasons. They are a perfectly portable food, and come in a convenient, single serving portion. They are easily incorporated into a picnic or a lunchbox, and are not messy or overly sticky in the way many other desserts are. All of these reasons are no doubt contributory factors to the current rise in the popularity of cupcakes; however, there are several less obvious reasons for their success. Due to the fact that cupcakes come in a convenient, single serving size, they can be embellished by using decoration, or baking them in unusual shapes, and let us not forget that they can be wrapped in professionally designed packaging, which has been engineered by experts to illicit a desire response in the consumer. This final point serves to highlight the fact that cupcakes are not only tasty and attractive, but they can be marketed, and this has been the foundation of the entire cupcake revolution so far.

No other dessert has captured the hearts of the American public quite as firmly as the cupcake. Fundraising events will often take the form of cupcake bake sales, parties and celebrations will usually see cupcakes as part of the spread, and cupcakes are arguably the most frequently consumed form of dessert in the office environment. There is just something about cupcakes that appeals to people, from their convenient size to their attractive packaging, they seem to strike a note with just about everyone. Children love them, adults love them, and they can be eaten anywhere and at any time. A real taste of home cooking in a fast food packaged, they are bound to be a sure fire hit.
