We’ve all been there. You get off the train at Kings Cross, step outside and…. where are you? How are you going to get to the airport carrying your rucksack, two suitcases and a child? Can a taxi really cost that much? Why on earth did you decide to come on holiday?

The stresses and traumas of transport to and from the airport can turn even the most relaxing break into a nightmare of screaming kids, aching backs and arguments. Many flights go from the main three London airports- Gatwick, Stansted and Luton- meaning you’ll have to work out a way to get to them which won’t break your back, your wallet or your mind.

One, seemingly simple option is a taxi. Get a train to London, taxi from there to the airport and…. oh, hang on. If you’re happy to pay an extortionate amount for the privilege then it is an option, but if not you’ll have to look elsewhere. Drive from home to the airport? Perhaps, but you’ll have to fight your way though the traffic, round the one-way system and onwards before finally paying a massive amount to be able to leave your car in the airport’s car-park.

Another option is provided by buses, but these can be complicated and difficult to navigate around. One useful service is that provided by easyBus (yes, they are the same company who provide easyJet and easyCruise). They offer low-cost transfers from anywhere within London to any of the three airports for around £2 for a one-way journey.

The routes covered by the buses are pretty comprehensive and take in most of the main tube stations in London. Services also run every 20minutes, so if you miss one bus it’s not the end of the world. Full details on routes, services and times can be found on the easyBus website.

The website also provides an option to book your ticket online. This is a great idea- it’s cheaper, easier, and means you can get all the details of your journey sorted in one go. It also avoids the potential problem of not being able to get a place on a bus, the easyBus service is extremely popular.

The buses’ themselves are comfortable and easy to use. It’s a direct route from the bus to the airport so you don’t need to worry about taking your luggage on and off- you can just put it away and relax. The buses are also a great option for green traveller; they cut down on fuel emissions through collective carriage of passengers which reduces the number of private vehicles and thus also the fuel emitted by them.

If you’re looking to start relaxing as soon as possible you can’t go too far wrong with booking your airport transfer with easyBus- it’s cheap, practical and environmentally friendly.

Erick Johnson travel a lot on a budget. He regularly saves money on his Airport Transfers when travelling to and from Stansted

No trip to Spain is complete without seeing the breathtaking mass displays that take place during Semana Santa. Every Easter the Spanish celebrate Holy Week in fantastic style. A celebration of the death and rebirth of Christ, Andalucia is famed for hosting the grandest celebrations in the country, but each city and province in Spain celebrates in its own special way.

You will never have experienced a festival like it. From the ornate and sometimes frightening looking costumes, to the smell of traditional Spanish dishes and thick incense smoke that clouds the streets, it is a feast for the senses.

Teams of men, sometimes numbering into the hundreds, carry vast floats from city churches, through the city streets and then back to the church at the end of each day. The floats are a sight to behold, intricately decorated with fresh flowers, wax figures and swinging bells that ring out with the swaying motion of the procession.

Many tourists are taken aback by the traditional costume worn by the participants. Children wear large cloaks with pointed hoods that obscure their faces with the exception of two small eye holes cut from the cloth. The children carry large candles, incense is burned, and brass bands follow behind playing suitably mournful music.

The religious overtones cannot be ignored, but most participants are not regular churchgoers. Seen more as a fun evening of entertainment by most families, it is a great place to go to sample some of the finest Spanish cuisine and wine, watch a spectacular show, and then continue the party after the processions have ended.

All of the restaurants and bars are stacked to the rafters each night during Holy Week, and the partying and eating usually spills out into the streets. You will find special traditional Spanish fare on sale everywhere, from savoury dishes to sweet treats, as people gather at their windows to watch the parades down below.

Holy Week is the final week of lent, usually at the end of February or start of March. If you are planning a holiday to Spain to see the festivities, then always check the dates before booking your flights. Cities where you will find the most lavish celebrations, like Grenada and Seville, are well served by airlines, and flights tend to be a good deal cheaper at this time of year.

You can find some incredibly cheap flight deals to Spain, particularly from London. But look out for costly airport transfers that can soon bump up the overall cost of your holiday. One option for those looking to reduce their costs is to travel with Easybus. Their express bus services run to all of the main airports in London and tickets cost just a few pounds each way.

Erick Johnson travel a lot on a budget. He regularly saves money on his Airport Transfer when travelling to and from Gatwick

One of, if not the largest hurdle faced by every new freelancer is the fact they will need to learn how to work remotely. Working remotely describes the situation whereby an employee does not work within premises provided by the employer. Most usually this means that the employee or freelancer is working from their own home or small office, whilst the employer or project buyer is part of a larger organisation.

The remote working freelancer may find that working from home presents far too many distractions. It can be very difficult to segregate your work life from your home life if your office is in the same place that you spend time with your family. This is doubly true of those remote workers who have small children, as they will often find it impossible to set aside an adequate amount of time for their work day. Another area remote workers may have problems is in the fact that they will have to work almost completely unsupervised. For some people this is not a problem as they thrive in this environment. For others who are used to firm management and who require encouragement and support throughout their working day, this can be a major hurdle. Additionally, some people have motivational problems when they are not supervised or monitored, when you are sitting in your company office and your boss is looking over your shoulder it is not so easy to be lazy. When you are sitting at home trying get some work done the temptation is always there to walk away and leave things until later.

For employers the problems are almost equal and opposite. Most employers are completely used to managing their staff and monitoring their results almost constantly. Employers find that for remote workers this is just not possible, as they do not have easy access to them. For some types of managers this can be a major headache, especially for those who prefer a very hands on style of management. Almost every line manager is used to being able to walk outside of their office and talk to a member of staff whenever they please, when managing a remote worker this is no longer possible, leaving them feeling they are no longer in control of the people who are working for them.

So how can both sides meet in the middle? The simple answer is by constant communication. It is recommended that for longer projects either the freelancer or the buyer initiates a short telephone call twice a day, this lets both parties know that the other is actively working upon the project and allows a short session for any discussion required over the project scope. Freelance remote workers may find it useful to submit a daily or weekly schedule of work to their employer, outlining what they propose to do during the next day or week and asking for the proposal to be accepted. Employers will find it useful to set sensible milestones and goals which will be reviewed fully once they are reached. This allows them to keep a finger on the pulse of the project and insure themselves that there is no scope slip.

Of all the freelance professions favoured by users of online freelance work brokerage websites, freelance writing is both the easiest to break into and the hardest in which to build a reputation. Many people approach freelance writing thinking that as long as they can type a sentence, and run it through a spell checker, then they can work as a freelance writer. Sure, there are dozens of people who pick up work with no more skill than this every day. However, these people seldom win repeat business and are often forced to compete on price alone.

Of course, freelance writing is a skill that you can actually learn as you earn. A great way to establish a reputation and build a home based business as a freelance writer is to start bidding upon small projects, at a lower than average rate. These small projects will allow you to develop your reputation and bring you in a small amount of money whilst you learn the ropes. As your skill level increases you should gradually raise your prices, eventually you will find a price level which reflects your skills completely. In effect you will be testing your own pricing based upon your previous performance and how potential customers rate your samples.

For new freelance writers who lack any form of reputation, it is important that they create an extremely high quality portfolio. Make sure that every piece of writing in your portfolio is 100% accurate and error-free. Nothing does more harm to a writer than a potential client finding a mistake in their text. You need to realise that running your work through a spell checker is not enough, you need to understand sentence structure and grammar before approaching any form of writing.

The great thing about being a freelance writer, especially one that specialises in website content, is the fact that right now there is a deficit between the amount of good freelance writers available and the work that needs to be produced. Web developers and search engine optimisation experts will tell you that “content is king”; this means that almost every website requires fresh and unique content regularly, to ensure that its ranks highly in search engine results. This single aspect of the freelance writing trade alone makes up a huge percentage of the work available.

There is whole range of different types of website content that web designers need regularly. Quite often you can find work writing blog posts or other news items to be used on corporate websites. Press releases are also frequently demanded. Article writing is possibly the most buoyant aspect of the Internet specialised freelance writing trade at this time, as these are often used for both link building and traffic generation purposes.

All in all the prospects for potential new freelance writers a very good. By specialising in website content and Internet related copy there is every chance that you will find there is more work available than you can possibly cope with.

Becoming a freelance web designer seems to be a popular move in modern times. Statistically the largest growing segment of home-based freelance workers consist of web designers and people who work in associated trades. Of all professions which suit freelancing the best a web designer sits top of the list. Many web designers each year make a successful move into freelancing, and most of these find the transition from a corporate lifestyle to a home-based business extremely straightforward. The reasons for this are quite easy to explain and we shall investigate a few of them below.

1. freelance web designers work with the Internet, this might not sound like a particularly important fact but it is the single most pertinent reason why web designers suit the freelancing arena so thoroughly. The very work they produce is presented via medium which they can use as the very transport for their own business. All communication can be handled via the Internet, they can report on the progress of their work and demonstrate their projects via the Internet, all in all the Internet enables web designers to become freelancers very easily.
2. For freelancers who seek most of their new work via one of the many excellent freelance job brokerage sites on the Internet, then it becomes very easy for web designers to tender for new work. This is because their portfolios can be presented to their potential clients very simply; nothing could be more straightforward than sending a new customer a list of URLs at which they can view samples of your work, or possibly sending them to visit previous client sites to be used in the same way.
3. Web designers will usually work upon larger freelancing projects, and the ability to be able to demonstrate versions of the project at hand in a live environment via the Internet is a great way for them to keep their clients up-to-date on how the project is progressing. This allows the project buyer to judge how work is proceeding and make comment and pass judgement on the quality of work to date.
4. Web designers have a major advantage over other forms of freelancers who are seeking work online. This is due to the fact that they can create their own website which can be used as a vehicle for acquiring new business and displaying their talents. In many ways a web designer is well-equipped in starting out in their freelance business venture as they will be able to develop their own web presence at a vastly reduced cost.

As we can clearly see, web designers who are considering a move into freelancing have clear advantages over other professions. The combination of their Internet enabled approach to working, their ability to create a high quality portfolio very quickly and their familiarity with the Internet in general, places them in a fortuitous position when starting out on their freelance business venture.

Graphic designers have always been very well-suited to the freelance style of working. Often seen as having one foot in the creative camp and the other in the corporate camp, they are fairly used to thinking out of the box and dealing with challenging work situations. This creative flair allows them to approach freelancing and working from home in a completely different way than most people. However, there are some particular ways in which freelance graphic designers face some challenges when it comes to breaking into the freelance market.

Most graphic designers have spent their entire working life producing graphics and images for the company they work for. When they make the move to becoming a freelancer they will need to ensure that they have a great portfolio, which presents their skills effectively. The problem here lays in the fact that almost all of the work they will have produced for their previous employers will be copyrighted, and they will be unable to use this work as part of their portfolio. This means that most graphic designers who want to become freelancers will need to spend time and effort creating a portfolio that is likely to appeal to potential customers.

Another way in which graphic designers may encounter problems when becoming freelance workers, is in the fact that they will be required to learn a whole range of skills that a more focused towards running their own business. Having come from a creative environment, and one which is fairly specialised, it is unlikely that they will have these skills at their disposal at the time they wish to begin their career as a freelance graphic designer. They will often find that they will need to spend time and resources in bringing themselves up to speed in areas where they perceive they have a skill shortfall.

However, putting these two potential problems aside for a moment, let us consider how well one could do as a freelance graphic designer. The Internet is growing at an amazing pace; there are now over 3 million websites online with more opening up every day. Almost every one of these websites requires some form of graphics. This means that opportunities abound for freelance graphic designers who are willing to take on smaller jobs for website owners. Previously graphic designers may have been used to working on larger, more long-term projects and they will often find that working as a freelance graphic designer, the projects they will be approached to work upon will be smaller than they are used to.

All in all the prospects of becoming a successful freelance graphic designer for a person with the right skill level are good. The freelance graphic design market is healthy and buoyant and continues to grow steadily. One of the best ways a new freelance graphic designer can seek work is through one of the many excellent freelance job brokerage sites, these are frequented by web designers who require graphic design talent to help them fulfil their own projects.

Ask any highly successful freelancer what the most beneficial thing for their business has been and is highly likely that they will tell you that it was forming trading partnerships with other freelancers. Consider the fact that freelancers usually specialise in a single avenue of expertise. Now consider the fact that most large projects require a whole range of skills provided by a host of different individuals to complete the project. It doesn’t take an awful lot to work out that by building a network of freelancers, who work in complimentary aspects of the freelancing industry, you will in effect be building a team of highly qualified professionals.

For example, let us consider a typical project spec upon one of the many excellent freelance job brokerage sites. The project may call for the development of a website with several pages, it may need to include some form of dynamic database driven content, it will need to look good and it will need to read well. Now let’s take a look at the skill set needed for this:

Site design – requires a web designer
Database code – requires a web developer
Website graphics – requires a graphic designer
Website content – requires a writer
Search engine marketing – requires an SEO expert

So we can see that this simple project actually requires five very different skill sets to complete. Unless you are an extremely gifted individual it is unlikely that you will be able to fulfil the entire project requirement alone. For this reason it can be extremely beneficial to network with other freelancers, if you do this you will find the over time, you will build a close relationship with these people and they will contact you when they require help with their own projects from somebody with your skills.

Commercial history is filled with success stories of businesses that originally started out as a loosely organised group of like-minded freelance workers. Building your own network of freelancing individuals is a great way of ensuring that you have access to a whole range of skills to call upon, should you face a project which you cannot complete alone. In time you may find that your network naturally gels together, forming a virtual corporation who share projects and workload between them.

One of the further reasons why it is good to network with other freelancers is due to the fact that for many people, who have previously worked in an office environment, working from home and spending the day alone can be a stark contrast to what they are used to. By making a few other freelancer buddies you can chat with during the day, either online or by telephone you will find that you will have some like-minded individuals with which to chat with for a few moments and take a well earned break during the workday.

Networking as a freelancer is arguably more beneficial than networking as a company employee, as all of the people you interact with have the possibility of bringing you fresh work and more income.

There can be no doubt that working as a freelancer suits many people, however it should be noted that for every individual who builds a successful freelance business there are many more that try and fail. There are many reasons why certain people are incapable of building a profitable business as a freelancer although, the primary one is that they were simply never suited to being freelancer in the first place. Below we will try to outline some of the qualities required to become an established freelance worker, and provide a set of questions you can use to decide if freelance work suits you.

Are you well organised and motivated? For many people the largest problem faced when working as a freelancer is the fact they are not monitored or managed in any way. This means that they will have to plan their own work day, ensure that deadlines are met, and generally motivate themselves. Most freelancers work from home, and for many this means that they must learn to juggle their home life with their work life. Although this may sound simple, anyone who works from home will tell you that often it is impossible to segregate the two fully, which can lead to problems.

Do you have heavy financial responsibilities? Although freelancers will often earn income above the industry average for an equivalent salaried position, freelance income can be sporadic. Unlike working for a company you will not have a regular pay cheque arrive on the same day every month. Instead you will find that there will be periods of feast and periods of famine as you wait for projects to complete and customers to pay. If you are the kind of person who already lives on a tight budget you will need to make sure that you have enough money in the bank to see you through the tight spots. In effect, cash flow becomes much more of a problem for a freelancer.

Are you a people person? This might sound like a strange question especially if you work in technical field such as software development. Consider the fact that you will need to deal with your own customers, you will need to win new work and you will need to liaise with your clients throughout the project life cycle. Some people are just incapable of this; they lack the basic social skills to communicate effectively with their clients. If you are one of these people then you will need to learn how to communicate effectively or hire an assistant to take care of this for you.

Can you take criticism? When working as a freelancer there will often be times that your client is unhappy with the work you have produced. This may not be due to any deficit on your part, and is most frequently caused by misunderstandings over the project brief and the scope of the project in general. You must be ready to accept this criticism and address any problems that have arisen. Remember, the customer is always right.

If you answered no to several of these questions above then it is strongly recommended that you reconsider your plan to make a move into the freelance arena. If you answered no to one or two of these questions then it could be that you can hire an assistant to cover the shortfall. It is far better to be prepared and equipped than to fail in your new freelance business venture.
